Day 23: Lombard + Don Pistos

Short blog post today, just chilled out and rested. I didn’t have a hangover, thank goodness! Calzone’s was the first destination for lunch, Italian for us! I had Angel Hair Pasta with tomato and garlic and Anna had a Salmon Pizza, I also ordered raspberry lemonade! I LOVE lemonade here, I order it at every opportunity. We went to Lombard St to see the winding roads, that walk was a crazy trek, uphill walks are so incredibly painful, we only walked uphill on one street, like a small part of Lombard, and I was like … sadface. Lombard St is really cool and super pretty, it’s always mega packed with tourists standing in the middle of the road taking pictures… lots of cars drive through these roads too, they must hate us.

We were pretty lazy from the day before so we decided to go watch The Amazing Spiderman, some quick googling told us that there was a showing in 30 minutes, so we took a cab from Lombard to the AMC Theatre at Van Ness, OUR FIRST MOVIE IN THE STATES! Woo… the movie was pretty good, I enjoyed it! Drinks are SO SO SO expensive at the cinemas.

We walked home from the Cinema, it was a 25-30 minute walk home and we walked through some strange neighbourhood where Anna and I kept giving each other funny looks until one of us went “Is it me or is this area strangely … empty?” we agreed, and I just started power walking until we got to Union Square. Harrowing experiences all around!

I had been googling good restaurants around the area and really wanted to try Don Pistos, Anna wasn’t even hungry and ended up eating quite a bit because the food was so delicious! A must try! It has a wooden door and if you didn’t already know about the place, you’d have a lot of trouble finding it, they give you Chips and a delicious Salsa to start with (replacing sourdough bread in other restaurants), that was so so addictive, we ended up finishing the entire bowl. I ordered a Sangria (slowly starting to get into red wines, though it doesn’t count, does it?), that hit me pretty quickly, I’m a cheap drunk and American drinks are kinda strong. We ordered a Mexican style Salmon Sashimi (delicious!), Tacos and a Hamburger thing, delicious delicious! Everything was super tasty, the vibe was awesome, though I could hear shit all because it was so loud, so probably not a good date area. The place is highly recommended.

Day 13: Union Square, SoHo, Century 21 revisited, Serendipity

We managed to knock down most of the things we wanted to do today, and we didn’t get lazy about any of it either, with a forceful determination, Anna and I woke up and left the house at 12:30pm – not lazy? Yeaaaahhh right. We didn’t even set particularly ambitious plans, since we jammed packed every touristy sight to visit when Doodles was around! Doodles landed in Sydney at around 6pm today (8am Sydney Time), and was already up and strolling around Cabramatta, the lucky girl doesn’t have any jet lag and didn’t even take the sleeping pills that were readily available to her. I on the other hand will be taking advantage of whatever sleeping aids I get – noise cancelling headphones, sleeping pills, a sleeping mask, the works!

Union Square
We first hit up Union Square, the park there is pretty I guess, I didn’t know what else was to see there, I saw a H&M store and got excited, I left this top I wanted 2 days prior because the lines are so so long on a weekend, shopping on a weekend should be avoided by tourists as all the locals flock there. Actually, it’s pretty insane on a normal day as well. While we were taking a romantic stroll at Union Square Park, it started to rain, yes, these are the tears of New York City from knowing that we will be leaving in 2 days, that’s what I tell myself. Anyway, we bolted down the subway and quickly abandoned our plans of visiting Washington Square (that’s where the big arch thing is, they have something that looks similar in France, it’s the setting of Suits episode 1, where Mike tells Trevor that he’s known his social security number since he was 9 and will f&^% him upppp – woo.. I am a Suits nerd.) EH, we will visit this tomorrow, and I know we will, since I am from the future and have already been there.

Oh gosh, I am going to eat my words here, I previously lamented about how incredibly shit it was and how crowded it was, I think my exact words were “HERE IS WHERE CLOTHES COME TO DIE!” Actually, those were Katie’s words. It is crowded all the time, but when you have time and are not in a particularly sort of rush, it’s not too bad. They have a ridiculous selection of sunglasses in the Downtown C21 store, I managed to get a pair of Michael Kors and Steve Madden sunnies, a Michael Kors black leather wallet that I kind of love, and a big fat red travel wallet (I put my phone, my money, my passport, my keycards, my receipts, my coins… my life, my mum and my dad inside). Anna also managed to get a Kenneth Cole bag, a nice Tommy Hilfiger wallet and a sunglasses case. FRUITFUL! IT WAS A FRUITFUL ADVENTURE!

SoHo
The fact that we have visited SoHo for the 4th time is evidence as to how incredibly awesome the shopping is. Best shopping in NYC, I say! I slipped into H&M to find my floral top and came out with 2 tops, a dress, and a bikini. WOO. I have an obsession with bikinis, sunglasses, and bras. I need to stop. Anna? Help me????

Serendipity + Magnolia Bakery
Next, we headed to Midtown East to try Serendipity again, the last time we went at 11pm and there was a 45min wait. This time, we went at 6pm, SURELY, we’d get in immediately right? WRONG. 1 hr wait again, I don’t think there is EVER a right time for Serendipity in NYC, so if you want to go, be prepared to wait. Anyway, we were determined and just put our names down and went for a browse in the Bloomingdales across the road, we also went into Magnolia Bakery because I wanted a mocha. I don’t even normally drink coffee, this is how it all starts, first it’s a mocha, then BAM, I’m a coffee fiend and it’s the end for me. No, I will not allow this to happen, I quit mochas! I will save myself! We ended up 2 cupcakes each, Anna with a caramel and red velvet, me with a vanilla and banana… I will never know what compelled us to think that it was a good idea eating 2 cupcakes before dinner. Some lady kept talking to me while I was eating my cupcake.

45 minutes went by and we went back to Serendipity and got seated fairly quickly. The décor of the place is adorable, it feels like you’ve stepped into vintage fantasy land, there’s  was a huge huge clock next to us, and there are vintage paintings everywhere. They are most famous for their Frrrozen Hot Chocolate – how it can be Frozen and Hot, I will never know, but we ordered one of these. We also ordered spicy chicken wings and a Turkey sandwich – hello America, land of the excess, we are learning your ways. The table beside us were going crazy with their food, I think they ordered like 5 big items and like 4 drinks – TWO PEOPLE ONLY. Anyway, the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate came and it was HUGE, I’m talking the size of two of my fists together huge, nothing special though… it tastes like Gloria Jeans Iced Chocolate, in fact, I would have to say Gloria Jeans is nicer because we have better cream. EHHH. The spicy wings I would have done without too, it’s just sticky and tastes like someone has poured hot sauce all over it. The Turkey Sandwich, now this, EVERYONE SHOULD ORDER! So delicious, so big, served with Irish Soda bread that Anna did not like but I loved.

Anyway, while we were waiting for our meals to come, Anna and I were complaining about not having seen any celebrities, we put our names on the stand-by list to go to David Letterman, but never got a call back, we were devo, Vanessa saw Melissa George, and that makes me even more devo. While I was people watching, a man was blocking the pathway of a waiter because he was playing with his kid and the waiter asked him to move, he quickly got up and went back to his seat and then I froze, this man looked oddly familiar… I quickly turned to Anna and I really did look like this: O_O, I have the worst poker face in the entire world, do not ever take me to poker. I grabbed her arm and started mumbling “OH MY GOD ANNA, OH MY GOD!! IT’S THE LEAD FROM ROYAL PAINS!! YOU WATCH ROYAL PAINS DON’T YOU?!?!? I WATCH ROYAL PAINS!! IT’S HIM! I KNOW IT! IT’S HIM! WHAT DO I DO?!?!?! I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DOOOOOO?!?!”, she turns to him and calmly goes “Yeah, it’s him”, wow, she must regret going on holidays with this nut job. He was on the table diagonal to us, 2m away from us! He seemed nice, played with his kids a lot and was polite to waiters. Ahhhh, that made my day, that 45min wait was worth it! I can officially report that we had our first celebrity sighting.

Day 5: Brooklyn & Coney Island

So… we were so tired yesterday that I did not blog, I feel horrible… because now I can barely remember the things we did/said, that’s the thing about blogging while travelling, you cover so many things each day that the moment you don’t write it down, your new memories sort of overwrite things. I’ll try my best though. It’s 12:22am, Anna and Doodles are asleep and I’m trying to do 2 days worth of blogging in a space of 15 minutes so that I can get some sleep! We’re waking up early and going to the Empire State Building! I turned on the dish washer and it is so loud, sometimes I just don’t think, I trust that they are both tired enough to sleep through it. :X Sorry kiddies.

We had grand plans today, we were meant to do the Statue of Liberty cruise, walk the Brooklyn Bridge and visit the Brooklyn Museum. I will tell you know, we abandoned 2/3 of those things! We had to catch the orange line at Rockafella to go Brooklyn (correct me if I’m wrong, Anna – my memory does not serve me well at this hour, and you know how horrible I am with the trains when I know I can rely on you, dude, what am I goign to do without youuu?). We took mass detours before we finally caught the subway, our detours included getting standby tickets for the David Letterman show (which is so close to us), going to the NBC Experience Store, trying to find the Jimmy Fallon standby tickets (failed, btw), and talking to some Rockafella security guard for 10 minutes about what to do in Brooklyn. Robert (the Rockafella Security guard) was extremely friendly and helpful with where to go since he was born and raised there, he suggested Coney Island, Prospect Park, his house… yes, he jokingly suggested his house. We ended up deciding to abandon Brooklyn Museum for Coney Island and off we went, the ride was meant to take 45 minutes but it didn’t feel that long, it’s pretty interesting looking outside the train into Brooklyn, it looks SO different to Manhattan, like something straight out of those movies.

So close to home! (Taken with Instagram)

Yay for being super tourists

Coney Island

Coney Island is the last stop on the Orange Line (catch D, I think, don’t listen to me actually, I think that this trip has taught me that I lieeeee a lot). It has an amazing boardwalk, a beach, a themepark, and yummy hot dogs, if you’re in the Brooklyn area, you should definitely visit. Coney Island is also home to Nathan’s Hotdogs, Amanda’s favourite hot dogs in the world now, they make amazing chilli cheese dogs and chilli cheese fries! There’s also another store in 7th Ave (I think? Again, I tend to lie a lot, don’t listen to me.) if you’re not bothered to travel all the way to Coney Island. We quickly ate lunch by the beach and did some people watching and then walked around the themeparks and squeezed into a photobooth and got some photos taken.

We strolled around and played some of those amusement park games, here, I learnt that Amanda Do is secretly an amazing dart thrower!!!! She’s crazy!! We played the game where you throw darts and pop balloons, the guy gave us 3 extra darts for $5, so we had 6 all up, I only managed to do 3, 1 in the first game and 2 in the second game! Anna did the same as I did, so we both ended up with this little ugly fish soft toys as a ‘you tried’ prize. Amanda is up, and pops 5/6 with so little effort, my jaw literally dropped, she won this cute little duck. We passed some dodgy tarot readers on our way to the station, but there’s not much of a story there.

Coney Island is an amazing place, lots of people, lots of rides, there’s people singing, people dancing, people fishing, people exercising – I love it!

Brooklyn Museum

So we decided to head to the Brooklyn Museum after Coney Island, after all, we did buy a New York Pass ($180 for 7 days). The Museum is gorgeous!!!!! There are 5 levels I think, the 5th level had all these Renaissance paintings, the other levels had more paintings… I am super bad with art and what period and style is what and what… so I apologise for these fail descriptions. God. The dishwasher is still going, it’s so loud, I feel like I’m in the engine of a huge ship. Anyway, one level was solely dedicated to the works of Rodin… let me show you pretty much what we saw on the entire floor:

Taken with Instagram

Yeah, it’s just chilling around with a vagina for a head. Bizarre, I tell you! This stuff was EVERYWHERE on that level, we did some admiring and left that floor pretty quickly and jetted off to the Egyptian Exhibit. They had 4 mummies! The floor was huge and they had all sorts of stuff like parts of the walls, and little statues… they also had a very long photographed copy of the Book of the Dead, which was kinda cool. Amanda went nuts in there and took maybe about 100 photos while Anna and I wanted to cry from sore feet.

At this point, we were ready to go home, we had dinner plans at 9:30pm and it was probably about 7? I don’t remember actually, I don’t recall much haha I’m usually just tired and I start falsifying memories. We were meant to do the Brooklyn Bridge Walk and then have Grimaldi’s Pizza, ABANDONED! ABANDONED! ABANDONED! Anna made the executive decision that we were not doing a 1 hour bridge walk after 7 hours of walking, even Amanda, the one who is ALWAYS keen on walking, wanted to go home and rest before heading out again. So off we went back home.

Mocking statues is such a tremendous amount of fun

Levain Bakery

We hopped onto an express train by accident on the way home and ended up on 72nd or something, Anna mentioned that the bakery I’ve been wanting to go to is here so we stumbled outside in search of it. Katie has been raving about these cookies and trip advisor rates it as the 2nd best ‘restaurant’ in NYC after Eleven Madison Park. The bakery is such a small hole in a wall, you walk downstairs and the area to order is like a 2mx2m box. I got a double chocolate chip cookie, dodo got a chocolate chip walnut cookie and Anna got both – smart woman, I want more now. They are the size of a muffin and don’t look particularly appetizing, but one mouthful and your life is changed… forever. Cookies are ruined for me forever now! These were AMAZING, soft on the inside, oozing chocolate, and crunchy on the outside – I will sell my soul for the recipe, and I will sell it now! I implore you to visit this little bakery if you visit NYC, you will not regret it. It’s on Amsterdam Avenue on 74th St. You really need to look for it, I don’t know how you’d find the place unless someone told you to go, you’re a local, or you have super crazy eagle eyes.

Massage

Our feet & backs were so so tired that we ended up going to some chinese massage place on 9th Avenue between 54th-55th, it was $18 for a 20 minute back or foot massage, I got two of them! Anna and Doodles got one each. The foot massage was a killer, I bit onto my hand the moment he put pressure onto the pressure points, so much paiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnn… things cracked under my foot that I never even knew existed! I felt so much better afterwards though, Dodo also commented on how good it was, though she wasn’t in any sort of pain. Anna’s masseuse had to get rid of a billion knots on her back, so she’s still in pain at this very moment from the mass back bashing.

Buddakan

I would say more about this place, but I have an entire post to talk about how amazing Eleven Madison Park is… so I will just say that Buddakan is very nice, highly recommended, get the Bo Bo tasting plate, it is chinese food but done a bit differently. We went there with Doodles so she could catch up with her UTS friend Vanessa and her boyfriend Andrew. Happy news came from this dinner, Amanda has plane buddies for her trip home! Thank goodness, I’m almost sure she can manage to get back to Sydney herself, but now I am 100% sure she will make it home!  Hm… I didn’t upload the dessert photos >=( I am lazy. I am now hungry, I realised about 1 hour ago that I haven’t had dinner!!!! Blah.

OKAY! Time to make a speed post about Eleven Madison Park!! No silly quotes from Doodles for Day 5, I’m sure she had many, but I can’t remember! Actually, from memory, I was the one who said a billion stupid things before 10am.

Day 1: A summary of a journey

I lied. This is probably not going to be a summary. I finally have access to wifi.. While I’m on an American Airlines plane flying from Dallas to New York! It cost me $8, but I think it’s worth it, that $8 will be the difference between me going mad and staying sane.

Let me start off with saying that we did NOT get to sit together on the flight from SYD-DFW, a 15 hour flight!! Stupid qantas, I hate you!! I will fly Virgin Australia forever from this moment on, $200 price difference and all!! Oh!! And now on this flight we are split up again!!

The flight was nasty – the longest I’ve ever been on, I started avoiding looking at the count down because it was just plain depressing. I ended up watching Big Miracle and Forrest Gump! I know, finallyyyyy… And I loved them both! I also read the Steve jobs book for a while, I am determined to finish it on this trip, it’s so good!

I ate an extremely tasty vanilla rice pudding with fig and honey, a delicious flapjack (never had one!!), icecream… And other delightful snacks… So qantas didn’t completely fail… I guess.

We finally arrived at DFW at around 1:40pm! Had to go through customs and we were still in line at 2:50pm… Our plane was boarding at 2:40pm! They let us through first and we had to transfer our luggage and change terminals and sign the customs form… It was a huge nuisance. Seriously America, why do you need to make people do so many things and go through immigration when you’re travelling between states??!? IT WAS A CONNECTING FLIGHT!!! We made a mad dash to terminal C… Found out our plane was delayed by 50 minute (it ended up being delayed for like 1 hr 15 min)… And MADE IT! Thank you American airlines for your tardiness! So here I am… On the plane…. With a man invading my personal space occasionally with his arm on my side of the chair… And his legs in my area….

/end rant.

So, I’m kinda excited to see times square tonight! I cannot wait for a shower!! We’re going soho tomorrow and Woodbury common outlets the day after and I think I need more money :X

Oh. Anna’s thong also broke at DFW!

Waiting at home for my chauffeur

40 minutes to go! I cannot believe this has gone by so quickly, from telling work I intended to go to the States in 2012 back in March 2011, to buying tickets in October 2011, to flying in 4 hours!

Not looking forward to the 21 hour though (incl 1.5 hour connecting flight at DFW) – not looking forward to it at all! I’m like one of the most restless people ever, I am really agitated after a 9 hr flight to Hong Kong, HOW WILL I SURVIVE THIS? I’ve resorted to reading articles at 1am titled ‘how to sleep on the plane properly’, ‘how to survive a long haul flight for the easy bored’.

I’ve loaded a plethora of books and tv shows to keep myself entertained for 10 hours, I’m sure I will be sleeping for 6 hours and chatting to the girls for another 3.5 hours… but bffs get sick of each other too on long-haul flights. I loaded the Steve Jobs biography onto my kindle, a few James Patterson novels, Janet Evanovich, George R. Martin… HA Songs of Fire and Ice… those fat books will probably last me the entire plane ride if my eyes don’t start bleeding words first. I sat there for 1 hour a couple of nights ago and wasn’t even through 1% of the book, a quick google search tells me that the book is 800 pages, I think the first book is the SMALL book too… 800 pages… it will take me approx 10-12 hours. I think that is my goal now, to finish GoT in one sitting 😀

I’ve been asked a few times what I’m most excited about, and I’ve always said Eleven Madison Park, without any hesitation or thought. I think next would be the American Museum of Natural History, then shopping!!!!!!! SEPHORA!!!!!!!!

WOO.

85 days!

So there’s only 85 days left! Woooooo.

A few things we NEED to get sorted:

  1. Our ESTA forms (Dodo and I have to do it, at least)
  2. Booking domestic flights + buses + trains (I.e. New York – Miami, Miami – San Diego, Orlando – San Francisco, San Francisco – Las Vegas, Vegas – San Diego, San Diego – LA)
  3. I need to buy a new luggage?
  4. I need to fix my travel insurance, I am covered for 2 days less than I am supposed to – and my stupid camera adds so much cost 😦 BUT PRETTY PHOTOS. WIN?
  5. Finalising itinerary, though this can probably wait 60 days!
  6. Figure out what I’m wearing to COMIC-CON! I’m thinking Katniss Everdeen? Too common? Probably.

I cannot wait to eat my heart out in the States! My heart is already set on Eleven Madison Park, which I will be booking the moment I can 😀 Gramercy Tavern sounds good too, so does Mr Chow, and Sylvia’s. I’m going to return to Sydney as a big fat blob. Woot.
